Our days
Each day during the Daily 5, 3/4 Mulitagers will engage in a variety of literacy activities. They can independently choose to work on writing or phonics, read to a partner, or read to self (at their just-right independent reading level). Students will also meet with Ms. Ott for small group guided reading instruction, during which they engage with high quality literature and learn comprehension, decoding and fluency skills slightly above their independent reading level. Every day, some students receive phonics and spelling instruction using Wilson Fundations or Spellography, both phonics-based program. Students will also learn cursive or extend their cursive skills using the Handwriting Without Tears method. Math will be fun! Games, hands on activities, an emphasis on problem solving and critical thinking, and a highly visual approach all contribute to making math a subject that students will enjoy, and which will help them grow as mathematicians. Math instruction is based on the Singapore model which builds a conceptual understanding of mathematic concepts. The Singapore method works to make childrens' understanding of mathematical concepts less abstract and more contextual. As a result, students learn the "why" of math - a foundational understanding that is critical to future success. Rounding out our schedule are social studies and science, which will be taught in a dynamic environment with an emphasis on research and project based learning. |
